Welcome to Sugar Lab Academy

I'm Ali, owner of Sugar Lab Bake Shop in Ventura, CA and now Sugar Lab Academy. Here you'll find all of my online courses, digital downloads, and whatever else I decide to put out. I'm so glad you're here!

A Little Bit More About Me

Sugar Lab Bake Shop

My mom Kelly and I founded Sugar Lab Bake Shop in April 2012. We started as a made to order bakery working out of a commercial kitchen. We then expanded to a small retail space right next to our kitchen. After 3 years there, we moved to a shopping center and had more typical retail offerings. Then in 2021 we moved to the beautiful Ventura Harbor Village. It's a pretty cool place to work! I definitely don't mind hearing sea lions while I'm working on emails.

Classes

I actually got my start teaching decorating at Michaels in San Luis Obispo. I had taken the Wilton cake decorating class with my mom and took the final course in SLO. My instructor was retiring and she told me I should get certified (I was also a cashier at Michaels). I began teaching and found a love of sharing what I had learned! After I graduated college, I transferred to the Ventura Michaels and continued to teach. I took a break from teaching almost a year after Sugar Lab opened. Then in 2018, I started teaching cookie and cake decorating in the bakery kitchen. I loved every minute of it. Some of my students even went on to start their own cookie business. February 2020 was my last in person class. I'm now teaching completely online. In person classes happen again, but for now, I'm focusing on the digital space.

Where Can You Listen to Me?

I've actually been on two podcasts! The first on the Bridal Business Bootcamp Podcast with Jamison Events. I chat with her about Vendor Etiquette and Good Communication. Then I was on Paying it Forward, a Square Podcast. In my episode, we talked about why it's so important to have your business finances separate from your personal finances

Let's Get A Little Personal

I have an amazing husband Steven; he's my rock and is a huge reason why I'm able to keep doing what I love. We have two adorable kiddos together, Christine who is 2 and Michael who will be 1 in just a few months (wait how did that happen?!) We have two German Shepherds and an orange tabby. Yea, our house is pretty full.

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. I’ve got answers.

How do I take a class with you?

First things first, have you signed up for my email list? That's the best place to find out when the next class is opening up for registration. Right now, all of my classes will be online so you'll get to work at your own pace.

Do I need to go to pastry school to be a baker or bakery owner?

Short answer: nope, because I didn't. Long answer: I think pastry school has it's advantages but it can also be very expensive. I've had a few employees who graduated pastry school and many more who didn't. You learn so much on the job that school simply can't teach you. The only time I say to for sure to go pastry school is if you want to work in fine dining and/or fancy pastries. It's a much more technical atmosphere and you'll be expected to have knowledge from pastry school.
